The BME Logistics Study 2024 “Risk Management and Resilience in Supply Chains” clearly shows that many companies continue to underestimate the importance of comprehensive risk management in the supply chain. Despite global crises in the world economy and increasing pressure on supply chains, more than two thirds of companies lack holistic supply chain risk management (SCRM).
As part of the study, Dr. Kai-Philipp Bauer and Philipp Carl, Managing Director of Rothbaum, give an interview and provide valuable impulses for resilient risk management in the supply chain. The results of the study make it clear that many companies are not yet exploiting the potential of their measures and need to further develop their risk management systems in a targeted manner.
Dr. Kai-Philipp Bauer emphasizes the need for a systematic, technology-based approach in order to identify risks at an early stage and counter them proactively. Modern analysis tools play a decisive role in identifying specific weak points. On this basis, innovative methods such as process mining enable automated process monitoring and control, allowing well-founded decisions to be made and implemented in a short space of time.
Undiscovered dependencies within the product portfolio are particularly problematic and often unexpected.

The BME logistics study makes it clear that transparency in supply chains remains a key challenge. Although 79 percent of companies record the first supplier level, only 14 percent take deeper levels into account – a problem that makes it difficult to identify and manage risks in the depths of the supply chain. The same applies to the customer side, where only 13% of companies go beyond the first level.
As the BME logistics study shows, companies have learned from the crises of recent years. They now rate their supply chains as significantly more resilient than before the Covid-19 pandemic, with the proportion of companies that rate their supplier-side supply chains as resilient or very resilient rising from 22% to 44%. On the customer side, this figure also increased from 29% to 55%.
Nevertheless, a sustainable and resilient supply chain requires continuous adjustments, targeted investments and optimization of risk management systems. Proactive measures are essential in view of the upcoming challenges for purchasing, procurement logistics and supply chain management – only those who act early will create a stable basis for the future. Rothbaum is at your side as an experienced partner with tailor-made solutions that make your supply chains fit for the future.
The BME Logistics Study 2024 “Risk Management and Resilience in Supply Chains” is based on interviews with experts conducted between July and August. This was preceded by an online survey, which was conducted from June 17 to July 22, 2024 and in which 232 people took part.
