Implementation of SAP TM
at Trotec

Process planning, requirements catalog, tendering and vendor selection for the implementation of SAP TM

Trotec Laser GmbH is a leading global manufacturer of laser technology and, due to its high export volume, handles a substantial amount of international freight. To standardize and automate the largely manual transportation planning processes, a modern transportation management system using SAP TM was to be implemented. Rothbaum Consulting analyzed the existing processes, worked with the business units to develop future target processes, and also defined the requirements for the system implementation. In addition, our team supported the bidding process and the selection of the implementation partner, thereby laying the groundwork for the successful implementation of SAP TM.

The cooperation between Trotec and Rothbaum in the SAP TM analysis project represents a significant step forward in the optimization of our logistics processes. Thanks to the careful selection of the provider and Rothbaum’s expertise, we are convinced that we will implement innovative and efficient solutions that will significantly improve our transportation and logistics operations.

Future-Proof Transportation Management with SAP TM

Challenge

The existing transportation planning processes were largely manual and no longer met the requirements of modern transportation management. The goal was to standardize the processes, reduce manual effort, and prepare for the implementation of SAP TM.

Implementation

The existing transport management processes were documented and supplemented with targeted analyses of transport data to identify opportunities for optimization. Based on the defined target processes, a requirements specification for SAP TM was then developed. Subsequently, the request for proposals was prepared, and potential implementation partners were selected and evaluated.

Results

The analysis of current and target processes, along with targeted evaluations of transportation data, provided insight into opportunities for optimization in transportation management. A structured requirements specification and the request for proposal documents formed the basis for the implementation of SAP TM. In addition, the selection of suitable implementation partners was successfully supported.

An implementation roadmap has been developed for the modular introduction of SAP TM. In a first phase, the introduction of SAP TM Basic is recommended. In a second phase, this can be expanded with functionalities from SAP TM Advanced.

Detailed Results

  • Development of a Future Process Landscape for Transportation Management Based on Existing Processes
  • Definition and compilation of requirements for the implementation of SAP TM in collaboration with the business units
  • Conducting a GAP analysis to identify weaknesses and assess the potential of SAP TM
  • Definition of supplementary measures to identify optimization opportunities outside the system
  • Assessment of cost-effectiveness and development of a roadmap for the phased implementation of SAP TM
  • Development of a use case and the request for proposal (RFP) documents for the implementation of SAP TM
  • Structured selection of an implementation partner using a long list, short list, and beauty contest
Potential providers for the implementation of SAP TM were evaluated on the basis of various qualitative and quantitative criteria. From this, a shortlist was drawn up and beauty contests were held with the potential providers.
Potential vendors for the implementation of SAP TM were evaluated based on various qualitative and quantitative criteria. This allowed us to create a shortlist and conduct beauty contests with the potential vendors.
