A Sustainable Logistics Campus in Siegenburg for Wolf

Design, planning, and implementation support for a modern logistics system

Wolf GmbH is a leading systems provider for heating, ventilation, and solar technology and part of the internationally active Ariston Group. In light of the expected growth in heat pump production, the logistics structure at the Mainburg site needed to be future-proofed, and a new logistics campus for production supply and distribution needed to be developed. Rothbaum Consulting designed the future logistics system, defined the requirements for the warehouse structure and automation, and assessed the economic viability as part of a business case. In addition, the project team oversaw the implementation of the logistics campus through the bidding process and coordinated the project stakeholders during the planning and implementation phases.

The Path to the New Logistics Campus

Challenge

To support the expected growth in heat pump production, production space had to be expanded and logistics reorganized. The goal was to develop a high-performance logistics campus with a future-proof warehouse and process structure.

Implementation

Based on process analyses and data collection, the project team analyzed the processes in production, the supply chain, and logistics. Subsequently, the optimal plant layout and the requirements for the logistics campus were determined, and various site, building, and warehouse concepts were developed.

Results

The project delivered a comprehensive concept for the new logistics campus that was ready for implementation. In addition to designing the warehouse and building layout, the technical requirements were defined, and a solid basis for decision-making regarding the selection of warehouse equipment was established.

Detailed Results

  • In the first phase of the project, a plant layout study was conducted to analyze the site’s future requirements. Due to the expected growth in heat pump production, additional production space had to be created at the plant.
  • To this end, existing logistics space needed to be freed up. At the same time, this presented an opportunity to fundamentally redesign the logistics system and tailor it to future requirements.
  • Following a thorough analysis of the current situation and the expected growth scenarios, various logistics concepts incorporating different warehousing techniques were developed.
  • In addition, various properties in the surrounding area were reviewed, and a comprehensive evaluation of the concepts was conducted as part of a business case.
  • Based on the project results, the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Siegenburg Logistics Campus took place on September 11, 2023.
